Baby's death investigated

A 16-month-old toddler is believed to have died in a car on Friday.

Details are sketchy but police say they have begun an investigation into the death of a 16-month-old baby boy on the afternoon of January 16, 2015.

Acting Central District crime manager Detective Inspector David Kirby said police were notified by the hospital, "and as with any sudden death, inquiries are being made to establish the circumstances which led to the death of the baby".

"A post-mortem was completed at the Wellington Hospital on Saturday and further tests are underway," he said.

Any death of a child is always tragic; however it is too early in the investigation to comment on what happened and what the outcome of the investigation will be."

Police have notified the coroner and Mr Kirby said he was not in a position to comment any further on the investigation.
