Lucy Knight has walked unaided for the first time since being seriously hurt after intervening in an attempted bag snatch last week.
On his Facebook page last night, Ms Knight's husband, Peter Thomas, said his wife walked by herself for the first time yesterday.
"The highlight was when she walked unaided for a wee bit... Today, she has managed more food, drink and some nice short conversations."
Ms Knight had emergency surgery for a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain after intervening in an attempted bag-snatch at a Auckland shopping centre last Tuesday.
Mr Thomas said the mother of six was a "patient patient".
"She is a bit concerned about her partially shaven head but we assure her that it will grow back. Saying that she is dubious is an understatement."
Mr Thomas continued to thank friends, family and the wider community for their support.
"Thank you to our support crew. As we enter the second week tomorrow I want to say how great it is to both be part of large families."
