Big wet to return for East Coast

A slight reprieve for residents of saturated Gisborne and Hawkes Bay should come this afternoon when rain eases, but the wet weather will return soon, MetService says.

A severe weather warning for the regions stayed in force last night, with 100mm of rain predicted before noon.

It said the rain that had drenched the areas for the past two days was expected to continue until tomorrow morning, albeit with lesser intensity.

The rain should ease for a period this afternoon before a second burst overnight.

Gisborne Civil Defence said rivers would be able to cope with the downpour but surface flooding continued to be a problem in some areas.

Several rural schools around the region were closed yesterday, and three homes in the Mangatuna area, just north of Tolaga, were set to be evacuated.
