Police divers searching for a woman who did not surface from a crayfish dive at the weekend have found a body.

The police national dive squad found the body just 100m from the last known position of 37-year-old woman who went missing off Motunau beach, east of Greta Valley in North Canterbury, at a depth of about 10 metres.

Formal identification has yet to be completed; however, police say "it is likely to be the diver who went missing" on Sunday morning.

The death has been referred to the coroner.

No details of the deceased will be released until formal identification has been made and next of kin have been notified.

Police investigations are ongoing.

The five police divers resumed their search about 7am this morning as underwater visibility had improved from yesterday.
