Body found in Wellington Harbour identified

A man whose body was found floating in Wellington Harbour yesterday morning has been named by police.

Members of the public saw the body of Finbarr Clabby, 39, near Queens Wharf and alerted emergency services about 10.40am.

The police maritime unit helped recover the body.

Police today revealed Mr Clabby had been socialising with friends the night before his body was found.

Sergeant Shaun Lingard said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, which had been referred to the coroner.

"This appears to have been an unfortunate accident after Mr Clabby had been out socialising with friends on Saturday night," Mr Lingard said.

Mr Clabby, of Irish descent, had been living in Wellington for the last seven to eight years.

"Mr Clabby's family have been advised of the incident and have been offered our sincerest condolences".

In March, 20 year-old man Jamie Gibbon died after jumping some 45m off the nearby Hikitia waterfront crane after a night with friends in the city.

Mr Gibbon's death has sparked calls for tighter security in the area.
