Bomb squad checks Whenuapai ahead of royal visit

The police bomb squad converged on Whenuapai this morning when a suspicious package was delivered to the Auckland RNZAF base - just two days before the Royals were due to land.

An area of the base was cordoned off and expert explosives officers were called to check the package.

It was later confirmed that the package contained clothing and had been delivered to the base by mistake. It was destined for another address.

Prince William and Catherine Duchess of Cambridge are scheduled to land at the base at 11.20am on Friday to start the Auckland leg of their New Zealand tour. There, they will meet air force personnel and their families.
