Bottle bomber pleads guilty

Dry-ice bottle bomber Damien Gary White admitted all five charges against him as his jury trial was due to begin in Christchurch District Court today.

The start of the week-long trial of another accused, Scott James Wreford Kelly, was delayed until this afternoon because Kelly was ill.

Kelly, 26 and unemployed, was seen by a doctor at the courthouse this morning. The doctor told the court he expected Kelly would recover enough for the trial to begin later in the day.

Judge David Saunders took the pleas and had the jury selection for the Kelly trial completed and then sent the jury away until the afternoon. He remanded White in custody for sentence on July 29.

White, 25, unemployed, admitted court charges of placing devices that were likely to injure people, with reckless disregard for safety.

He admitted leaving the devices at Northlands Mall in Papanui, The Palms shopping centre in Shirley, a service station at Carlton Corner, in a rubbish bin in Colombo Street, and in the central Christchurch Bus Exchange.

He also admitted a charge of injuring a worker at the Bus Exchange with reckless disregard for safety.

The crown plans to call evidence from 30 witnesses at the trial.

White is the second person to plead guilty to the bottle bomb charges, which involved incidents around Christchurch on August 17, 2007. Raymond Gary Coombs, 26, admitted the charges in April and was jailed for two years three months.
