Car smashes into Auckland sushi restaurant

One person is injured after a car smashed into a sushi restaurant in Botany this afternoon.

The crash happened at the intersection of Chapel Rd and Ti Rakau Dr around 2pm, Jarron Philips of the Fire Service northern communications centre said.

The car crashed into the restaurant in a building that also housed a BNZ Bank branch, he said.

Firefighters were called to the scene about 20 minutes after the crash to assess the structure of the bank.

"We've been called because there's just some concern about the structure of the building in the BNZ, so we were called out to assess that," he said.

"The building's been deemed to be sound, but we've had to remove some of the framing in order to remove the car.

"Now that framing's been removed, the car was able to be removed as well."

One person had suffered minor injuries in the incident, he said, but it was unclear whether that person was the driver of the car or someone inside the building.
