Case numbers dropping

Covid-19 case numbers continue to tumble with the South yesterday registering its lowest number of reported daily infections since February 21.

Even allowing for the usual lower reporting of positive tests over the weekend, the trend in both Otago and Southland, and the country as a whole, has been steadily downward in recent weeks.

There were 177 new cases reported in the South yesterday, the lowest daily tally since February 21, right at the start of the outbreak of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

That followed 247 new cases being reported on Saturday, and meant that the seven-day rolling average of new cases was 294: a week ago it was 435.

Nationally, 3650 new cases were reported on Saturday and 2618 yesterday, the latter also the sort of infection rate not reported since February.

Over the weekend a further 38 people were reported as having died while being infected with Covid-19, one of whom was in the South.

There were 557 people nationally in hospital who had Covid-19.

Of those, 24 were in Dunedin or Southland Hospitals; the southern figure does not include rural hospitals, several of which are managing Covid-19 cases.
