Police are looking for a cheeky car thief who took a noise control officer's car and crashed into a parked police car in the rush to get away in Northland.
Mid North Senior Sergeant Brian Swann said noise control and police were called to Broadway, Kaikohe's main street, after a series of noise complaints in the early hours of Sunday morning.
However, while the noise control officer, a security firm employee contracted to the Far North District Council, was seizing the offending stereo about 3.20am, someone took off with his car.
But the driver hit a police car parked nearby, ripping off a wing mirror and scraping the side panels.
Snr Sgt Swann said the stolen car was recovered after it was abandoned a short distance away.
Police were hoping to identify the driver from CCTV footage.
"If we identify someone they'll have a little repair bill to pay."
