A suspected hit-and-run driver has been arrested nine days after he allegedly fatally hit a pedestrian in Christchurch.

Police allege a van driven by Liam Strickland (21) fatally hit pedestrian Dean Amies (46) after a pursuit in New Brighton on August 7.

Police said the chase began after a vehicle of interest carrying three people failed to stop but when the pursuit became to risky to continue, they ceased their chase and soon located the car and arrested two of the passengers.

Strickland fled, allegedly stealing a nearby van before ramming a police dog vehicle.

This evening, Acting Canterbury district commander Superintendent Mike Johnson said the armed offenders squad found and arrested Strickland today.

The investigation into Amies' death continues, he said.

"We would like to thank members of the public in Canterbury for their assistance and understanding while police have made proactive enquiries to locate him.
