Christchurch quake couple win $1.3m in lottery

A Christchurch couple whose home was badly damaged in the February earthquake has won A$1 million (NZ$1.3 million) in an Australian lottery - and plan to relocate to Queensland.

The pair were visiting family and researching a possible move to Brisbane last week when they picked up a Wednesday Gold Lotto ticket.

After the draw they went to a newsagent to have their ticket checked, and were told they would need to check with Golden Casket's head office to see exactly how much they had won.

"When Golden Casket told us we had won one million dollars we burst into tears," they said.

The couple, who were not named by the lottery, told the Gold Lotto it has been an "extremely tough year".

"We started the year with the tragic Christchurch earthquake in February. Then later in the year we both lost our jobs and suffered a family member's unexpected death.

"Following our job losses, we decided that we would leave Christchurch and move to Queensland.

"This money will be an absolute life line for us. We'll be able to buy a house and set up a new life in Queensland."
