Christchurch schools are open: Tolley

All of Christchurch's schools were open today except for two special schools and two private schools whose students had been accommodated elsewhere, Education Minister Anne Tolley told Parliament.

"I'm pleased that as of lunchtime today 1543 students have returned to Christchurch," she said.

"I talked to some of them yesterday and they were telling me how awesome it was that their school was now open and they could get back to some sort of normality."

Mrs Tolley said 74 percent of early childhood education centres (ECEs) were now open.

Emergency funding to ECEs had been extended so they remained financially stable when children had temporarily moved away or were being kept at home by their parents.

She said 25 centres had been relocated into temporary accommodation.

"We're providing trauma support and counselling, portaloos where necessary and any other logistical support centres may require."
