Climber's body found in Canterbury

The body of a climber believed to have fallen to their death has been located in mid Canterbury.

A person activated a personal locator beacon on Mt Harper about 4.30pm yesterday after their partner did not return from a day climbing trip, Constable Philip Simmonds said.

A rescue helicopter flew around the area where the person had been.

"The rescue helicopter observed a body believed to be the person missing; however, due to the location was unable to access it," said Mr Simmonds.

"It appears the person has fallen a considerable distance."

The person who activated the beacon is reportedly uninjured and was flown back to town.

Rescuers will try to recover the body today.
