More cordons will be lifted today on roads closed by the Port Hills wildfires.

This morning the Christchurch Civil Defence announced cordons on Kennedys Bush Rd and Hoon Hay Valley Rd were lifted at 8am, allowing residents from more than 100 properties to return home today.

However, Civil Defence controller David Adamson said only residents would be able to enter the fire zone and they will have to show a photo ID to pass through the cordon.

Police are asking residents to be patient if they face a wait at the cordon.

Recreational tracks at the top of Kennedys Bush Road will remain closed.
