The Department of Corrections has confirmed that a prisoner died at Auckland's Paremoremo Prison at the weekend.
Northern regional commissioner Jeanette Burns said the man died on Sunday morning.
She said attending staff gave him medical attention, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A coroner's inquest would be carried out, and Corrections would also investigate.
Ms Burns said any death that occurred in custody was a tragedy and the department's thoughts were with the man's loved ones during this time.
His next of kin have been informed.
