Court closed for passport hearing

A closed court hearing in the High Court at Wellington is about the cancellation of a New Zealand passport.

The lower level of the High Court building in Molesworth St has been off-limits to the media and public for the past two days.

A statement from Chief High Court Judge Justice Geoffrey Venning yesterday said the hearing was a preliminary one in civil proceedings brought under the provisions of the Passports Act 1992, which allows for closedcourt hearings where classified security information is involved.

‘‘The applicant has challenged the cancellation of a New Zealand passport,’’ Justice Venning said.
