Crews busy with Guy Fawkes callouts

Firefighters were kept busy overnight with Guy Fawkes-related callouts, including a Wanaka fire which threatened a house.

The Fire Service said it was a "disappointing" result, as callouts doubled on Thursday from the same night last year.

Fire risk management national adviser Todd O'Donoghue said crews attended 117 firework-related incidents.

"Last year there were 56 calls - quite a disappointing result really," Mr O'Donoghue said.

"Most of the calls were relatively minor, just being trees, bushes and fences and that sort of thing."

One blaze took hold of a scrub in Mt Wellington, Auckland.

"There were a couple of near misses," Mr O'Donoghue said.

"[There was] a firework under a house in New Plymouth and that started a fire. That was put out by the people there."

In Wanaka, trees and a fence near a house caught alight, but firefighters put it out in time.

"There was also some disappointing behaviour with people firing fireworks out of cars, which the police have followed up."

Mr O'Donoghue said callouts for earlier in the week were down compared with last year, possibly due to poor weather that had cleared by last night.

He reminded people planning to let off fireworks over the weekend to do so safely, ensure someone sober is around to do it, and make sure there is enough clear space.

"The number of calls we had last night occupied our firefighters, who could be required at any time for other emergencies," Mr O'Donoghue said.

"As well as the danger aspect, it can also put other people at risk when our resources are stretched."

Mr O'Donoghue said firefighters also attended non-Guy Fawkes incidents last night, including house fires.

In Christchurch, a police spokesman said there were several public disorder incidents after the fireworks display at New Brighton pier.
