Cyclist dead after collision with truck

A cyclist in her early 50s was killed when her bike and a semi-trailer truck collided in Palmerston North today.

The crash happened on Summerhill Drive just after 7am, Acting Detective Sergeant Shelley Ross of the Manawatu CIB said.

Both the cyclist and the truck were travelling up the road when the collision happened, she said.

The woman died at the scene.

Police were speaking to the truck driver who did not suffer any injuries but was shaken by the crash.

"We are still in the process of piecing together what factors have led to the crash and it is too early at this stage to comment on any potential charges.

"The Serious Crash Unit is investigating and officers are continuing to make inquiries and speak to witnesses," Ms Ross said.

Police would not release any further details about the woman until her next of kin has been informed.
