A man is believed to have drowned in Whakatane's Awatapu Lagoon.
A St John Ambulance northern communication centre spokesperson confirmed they attended an incident at the lagoon about 3.45pm today.
The spokesperson confirmed a male was dead on arrival at the scene.
A person living nearby the lagoon, who did not wish to be named, said he had been told by others a man on a motorised scooter had ended up in the water.
About 6pm a crane lifted a motorised scooter from the lagoon and put it on a tow truck. Police are still at the scene.
