Driver in fatal crash charged with manslaughter

A 21-year-old driver has been charged with manslaughter over a car crash in southern Hawke's Bay which left one of his passengers dead and another seriously injured.

The man appeared in Morrinsville District Court today charged with manslaughter and driving with excess blood alcohol after he allegedly lost control on a bend and crashed into the side barriers of a rail overbridge on State Highway 2 at Papatawa, 19km southwest of Dannevirke, on December 6.

Andrea Pramm, 22, was killed in the crash while 18-year-old Shaylah Lawson is still in hospital recovering from her injuries after being thrown from the car.

The driver was granted name suppression and bailed to reappear in Dannevirke District Court in April.
