A truck driver has yet to be located after the truck came off a road and crashed down a bank.
Fire service and police were at the scene of the crash this morning on the Hundalee Hills, State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura.
Southern fire communications shift manager Andrew Norris said that fire-fighters were trying to reach the truck by descending down the bank using ropes.
"The driver is yet to be located," he said.
The truck was between 25 and 40 metres down the bank, he said.
"They've got to make access to the cab, locate the driver and identify the load [carried on the truck]," he said.
"At this stage there has been extensive damage to the truck."
