Drug smuggler dies after package bursts open

A Colombian drug smuggler has died in Auckland after a drug package burst inside her.

Sorlinda Arirtizabal Vega, 37, and other family members arrived from Buenos Aires on Tuesday morning, TRN reported.

Yesterday morning she was taken to Auckland Hospital and died a short time later.

A post-mortem examination showed she was carrying twenty 20g packages of what was believed to be cocaine, police said.

Police said at least one of the packages had burst.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said there were always risks when smuggling drugs internally and Ms Vega paid with her life.
