Eagle hunts down dangerous driving suspects

Two people who fled police on foot after the vehicle they were in was seen driving dangerously in central Christchurch last night have been hunted down by the Eagle helicopter.

A police spokeswoman said a vehicle was seen driving the wrong way along Kilmore St about 10.45pm yesterday.

"The Eagle helicopter directed police on the ground to its location, and officers attempted to stop it on Madras St," she said.

"The vehicle failed to stop and drove away at speed."

Police on the ground did not continue their pursuit of the vehicle. Instead, the Eagle helicopter was called in to follow the vehicle and direct officers on the ground.

The chopper tracked the vehicle to Mayfield Ave in Mairehau, where its two occupants had left it and fled on foot, the spokeswoman said.

The Eagle followed the driver and directed police to his location where he was apprehended just before 11pm.

It also showed officers where the passenger was hiding and she was also arrested.

The spokeswoman said a 29-year-old-man has been charged with failing to stop, dangerous driving and resisting police.

The 30-year-old woman has been charged in relation to outstanding offences.

They are both due to appear in Christchurch District Court today.

It follows an incident in Christchurch on Sunday night in which a man who crashed into another vehicle, injuring several people, then ran from police.
