Earthquake felt throughout North Island

The North Island was rattled overnight by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake.

The quake struck just after midnight 80 kilometres north of White Island in the Bay of Plenty.

It was at a depth of 230 kilometres and was likely to have been felt throughout the North Island, Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences said.
