Elderly tramper and dog rescued

An elderly man and his dog are recovering after being rescued from Tararua Forest Park north of Wellington.

The man in his 70s was tramping with his dog, when he activated his personal locator beacon about 6pm last night.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew found them near a stream off the Waiotauru River Track.

A paramedic was winched down to assess the tramper, who was then lifted on board.

The crew used a specialist winch to rescue the dog.

The man has been treated for minor injuries in Wellington Hospital.

The dog ate pre-cooked sausages and a had bowl of water at the helicopter base before being reunited with family.
