Elderly woman dies after being hit by car

An elderly woman has died after being hit by a car in a Hamilton shopping centre carpark today.

Senior Sergeant Dave Litton said emergency services were called to the Horsham Downs Shopping Centre in Rototuna about 10.20am.

"The matter is still under investigation but initial indications an 87-year-old woman was walking across a pedestrian crossing in the shopping centre carpark when she was struck down by a vehicle and had her leg run over," he said.

Inspector Freda Grace said the woman who was pushing a shopping trolley across a pedestrian crossing in the car park when she was hit.

The woman suffered serious leg injuries and was taken to Waikato Hospital where she died a short time later, she said.

The incident followed the deaths of two other pedestrians in Waikato this month.

A 64-year-old woman died after being hit on Whatawhata Rd on March 6 and an 88-year-old man died in hospital last week, 10 days after being hit on State Highway 1 at Karapiro.
