Emotional finale to The Block

The Block contestants Ben and Libby have won the show in an emotional finale, taking home $237,000.

A tearful Libby said it was "the ultimate result", after their property sold for $961,000 - a profit of $157,000 - the most of the four properties on Anzac Rd on Auckland's North Shore.

The popular pair beat three other couples to take the top prize when the renovated properties went under the hammer at a tense live televised auction.

Fellow contestants Richard and Sarah's house sold for $870,000, earning them a $4000 profit they planned to put on a home.

Ginny and Rhys made an $11000 profit and Rachel and Tyson failed to make any profit after their house sold for its reserve of $798,000 in the final auction of the night.

Chosen from more 1000 applicants, teams Sarah and Richard, Ginny and Rhys, Libby and Ben and Rachel and Tyson were selected to spend nine weeks renovating houses on the same street for the reality show.

The teams only keep the money made above the reserve, with the winning couple walking away with an additional $80,000.

In the auction room, the contestants admitted to some nerves before their big moments but were looking forward to seeing how much their houses would sell for.

The initially rundown properties in Takapuna have been transformed by the contestants and gained huge public interest in the process.

The reality show followed the teams' room-by-room makeovers under extreme pressure and on tight budgets.

The four houses had a pre-renovation capital value of $750,000.

At open homes, more than 15,000 people turned out to catch a peek of the fully renovated and furnished properties and meet the contestants.
