Bill English has been re-elected as National's leader, with Paula Bennett remaining his deputy.

English says the new government appears to already be preparing the public for a slower economy - while also promising higher incomes.

"I think they'll find that a bit of a challenge."

English confirmed his position as leader was not challenged at today's caucus meeting.

Asked if he intended to lead National into the 2020 election he said: "Yes I do."

English was asked about a suggestion that National needed generational change when John Key quit as prime minister - when asked if he feared being "rolled", he said: "I'm confident in the discipline and focus of the caucus."

Asked if the new Government would survive the next three years, English said: "To some extent that's up to them."

English said the meeting of National MPs today was "sober and positive".
