Ex-school bus driver charged with historic sex offences

A former Wellington school bus driver and Scout master has been arrested and charged with historic sex offences against young boys.

Godfrey Ball, also known as Geoffrey, was arrested by Masterton police for alleged historic sexual offences against boys between 1964 and 1985 while living in Wellington.

Ball, 78, appeared at Masterton District Court yesterday facing 12 representative charges including indecent assault and doing an indecent act.

His three victims were aged between seven and 16 during the period of the alleged offending.

Masterton Police child protection team Detective Damian Doocey said Ball was not granted name suppression and has been remanded in custody.

"This matter is being thoroughly investigated and a number for search warrants have been executed today.

"Our concern is that there may be other victims who we are yet to identify and we encourage anybody with concerns to make contact with police."

Police inquiries established Ball used his position as both as school bus driver as a Scout master to access his victims, Mr Doocey said.

"There may well be people who remember important information which could assist police."

Ball will next be appearing at Masterton District Court on June 23, when a bail application will be heard.

Anyone with information regarding Ball's offending or who carried similar concerns were advised to contact the Masterton Police Child Protection Team on (06) 370 0309 or visit their local police station.
