Family are at the bedside of a critically-injured 23-year-old who was seriously assaulted at a party near Eden Park last night.
The man was taken to Auckland Hospital with head injuries after the incident at a property on Bellwood Avenue in Mt Eden.
Police said the man and his brother had left the Rugby Nines tournament at Eden Park shortly before the incident.
They then went to a party on Bellwood Ave, a short walk from the stadium, where the man was seriously assaulted about 8.10pm.
Ambulance services were first on the scene and called police a short time later.
Detective Inspector Chris Cahill said police had secured the property and a scene examination was almost complete.
"Staff have spoken to residents and partygoers and are trying to get to the bottom of what took place and who is responsible for the young man's head injuries," Mr Cahill said.
The man remained in a critical condition in Auckland Hospital with family at his side.
"We are liaising with hospital staff and supporting the man's family at this difficult time," Mr Cahill said.
