A Hawke's Bay farmer spent 14 hours trapped beneath a 200kg quad bike after it flipped on him.
Bruce Carswell, 56, flipped his bike after clipping a fence post at Kereru, 45km west of Hastings, around 9am on Monday, The Dominion Post reported.
The bike landed on his lower legs and pinned him chest-down in mud.
His wife Karen arrived home at 5.30pm and noticing he had not been home for lunch, began searching for him.
At 8pm, she called a group of neighbours who joined the search.
They found Mr Carswell about 11pm.
Searcher Danny Angland said they pulled the bike off him and covered him with jerseys until an ambulance arrived about midnight.
"He was pretty sore, but he was happy to see us."
Mr Carswell was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital, where he is in a stable condition.
He suffered bruising, loss of feeling in one leg, and crush syndrome, in which muscle breakdown products enter the bloodstream and can cause renal failure.
Mrs Carswell praised her neighbours who "came without hesitation".
