Fatal crash near Havelock North

A 25-year-old man has died after his car crossed the centreline, hit a bridge barrier and landed in a stream near Havelock North this morning.

Police believe the man was on his way to work about 4.15am, when the accident happened near the intersection of Longlands and Te Aute Roads.

"He was heading toward Havelock North, he's come by the intersection, crossed the centreline at Longlands and collided with the bridge on the opposite side of the road," Senior Constable Corey Ubels of the Serious Crash Unit said.

He was discovered by a family member about 4.40am; emergency services were called but the sole male occupant was already dead, trapped in his car after it ended up in the stream.

No other people or vehicles were understood to have been involved, police said.

The Serious Crash Unit were investigating, however it was too early to determine what had caused the accident.

"Everything is up for consideration at this stage."

The name of the dead man would not be released until his family were advised of the accident.
