Fatal Rotorua crash adds to horror weekend road toll

Police are attending a fatal crash near Okere Falls, Rotorua District.

Two cars crashed on State Highway 33 shortly after 7am.

One occupant has died and another received serious injuries.

The road is closed and cordons are in place on State High 33 and Allport Rd.

Police advise motorists to avoid the area.

The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.

Police are urging drivers and passengers to buckle up and drive safely after a series of fatal crashes throughout the country this weekend.

Two people have died and five have been hospitalised over Canterbury's long show weekend, prompting police to issue an urgent seatbelt warning.

Two motorcyclists died and one is in a critical condition following a crash south of Otautau in Southland about 12.45pm yesterday.

Meanwhile another motorcyclist was killed in a crash on the West Coast yesterday afternoon.

A fourth motorcycling fatality yesterday happened in Henderson, Auckland.
