Filming assault could bring charges

A person who filmed a vicious assault against a schoolgirl and posted it online may be facing charges, police say.

The assault happened at the bus depot on the corner of Mangakahia Road and Broadway, Kaikohe about 3.30pm on Tuesday.

Yesterday a 15-year-old girl was arrested in relation to the assault, and she appeared at the Kaikohe Youth Court this morning.

Today, a police spokeswoman said police were also looking into whether any charges could be laid against the person who filmed the attack.

"We are appealing for any information from any witnesses," she said.

At this stage it was difficult to say what charges the person who filmed the video might face, she said.

"It would just depend on what information we get, and then we would have to look through that and all the evidence and go from there, as to whether there would be any charges laid."

Senior Sergeant Brian Swann said the victim suffered injuries to her face and head in the prolonged assault was witnessed by a large crowd of bystanders before a member of the public intervened.

"The victim and her family are understandably very upset and shaken by this vicious unprovoked assault."

Mr Swann said it was of great concern to police that a video of the assault has been posted online and widely circulated.

The sharing of this video indicates an acceptance of this type of thuggish behaviour and a glorification of the offender, he said.

The victim suffered further harm in the sharing of the video, he said.

Anyone who witnessed the attack, or had any information, was asked to contact police.
