Fire on land where killer is banned

An unexplained fire on a block of Coromandel land, in the region convicted double murderer David Tamihere is banned from visiting, is being investigated.

The fire on February 25 broke out on Maori land known as the Mataora Block, Fairfax reported.

Two units were well ablaze when Waihi firefighters arrived on scene, northern fire communications shift manager Jaron Phillips told Fairfax.

Both units were levelled in the fire.

Waikato police told Fairfax they were still waiting on a fire investigator's report, but it was being treated as unexplained.

David Tamihere spent 20 years in prison for the murders of Swedish tourists Urban Hoglin, 23, and Heidi Paakkonen, 21. Ms Paakkonen's body has never been found.

Tamihere, 58, was released in late 2010.

In 2013, Tamihere flew over the Coromandel, where the Swedish tourists were last seen alive, with a television crew for a current affairs television programme.

The flight prompted the Parole Board to charge Tamihere with breaching his parole conditions, which state he cannot visit the region without approval.

The charge was dismissed as the judge found flying over the exclusion zone did not breach conditions.
