Firefighters tackle chemical spill

Firefighters are currently working to clean up a chemical spill in Christchurch.

Fire Service southern communications shift manager Andrew Norris said the liquid had spilt from a drum in the yard of a freight forwarding company in the suburb of Wigram.

A hazardous materials unit was handling the spill, which had occurred in an industrial area.

The liquid, which was yet to be identified, was not posing any risk to nearby properties or people, Mr Norris said.

The Fire Service had been alerted to the spill at about 10am.
