Fisherman's body found at Lake Coleridge

Police divers have found the body of a fisherman who was swept underwater at Lake Coleridge in Canterbury yesterday.

Search and Rescue co-ordinator Sergeant Phil Simmonds said emergency services were called to Lake Coleridge, near Mt Hutt, about 5pm to reports a man had been swept under while fishing.

"Initial reports suggest the man had been attempting to come to the aid of another fisherman.''

Four members of the Police National Dive Squad were searching at the lake today, including speaking to witnesses to gain a better idea of where to focus their efforts.

Environmental conditions had been tricky for search and rescue teams, as the lake was very deep and temperatures were as low as 6degC.
