Fishing net stops Earthrace

The New Zealand powerboat Earthrace has resumed its chase of the round-the-world speedboat record after being halted by an abandoned fishing net wrapped around its port propeller.

The 23m trimaran was today travelling at 41kmh between San Diego to Hawaii after skipper Pete Bethune dived overboard at night to cut the net away from the propeller and driveshaft.

At noon (NZT) Earthrace had travelled 15,552km from its start in Spain on April 27 and is expected at Maalaea Harbour, on Maui late tomorrow or Thursday (NZ time).

Earthrace is hoping to claim the world record from British boat Cable and Wireless which circumnavigated the world in 74 days in 1998.
