Five face court after police chase

A 30km police chase on Wellington's main highway came to a grinding halt when a burst tyre forced the fleeing vehicle to go so slowly it eventually parked in a layby.

Five people are due to appear in court today after the overnight chase, which started in Waikanae just before 1am during a routine traffic stop.

Waikanae police tried to pull over a car on Ngaio Rd but it sped up as the driver tried to evade the officers.

A police spokesman said when officers signalled the car to stop the driver went even faster.

The fleeing car headed south on SH1's Kapiti Expressway followed by police before the driver pulled into a layby near Plimmerton.

At one point one of the car's tyres blew and the car was driven slowly before it was eventually parked on the side of the road.

Police said five people would appear in the Porirua District Court today on a range of charges including failing to stop, dangerous driving and warrants to arrest.
