Five injured, one critical after car hits pedestrians

At least five people have been injured and one is in a critical condition after a car struck a group of pedestrians on Auckland's North Shore.

Another person is in a serious condition and a third has moderate injuries. Two others have minor injuries after the vehicle struck outside Westlake Girls' High School about 8.30am.

Pedestrians were reported to be lying injured on the ground.

The most seriously injured has been taken to North Shore Hospital.

A witness has posted on Facebook that a metal fence at the college has been smashed through and groups of people have been struck by a vehicle.

Other witnesses said a bus stop outside the school has been destroyed.

An eyewitness says a shoe is left on the ground and school bags have been left scattered near where the pedestrians were struck.

Wairau Rd is closed at the intesection with Forrest Hill Rd.

Emergency services including police, fire and ambulances are outside the high school.

Staff at Archibald and Shorter North Shore on Wairau Rd say they saw several ambulances and police cars pass.
