Fog disrupts flights out of Christchurch

Thick fog has descended on Christchurch this morning, disrupting air travel and forcing rush hour traffic down to a crawl.

Flights in and out of the city have been delayed and at least three cancelled as fog rolled in across the city.

It comes a day after air travel in and out of Wellington and Dunedin ground to a halt and thousands of passengers were left stranded after fog rolled in and stayed for more than 24 hours.

A Christchurch Airport spokeswoman said planes were able to take off and land but the foggy conditions were mainly affecting smaller craft that flew to regional airports.

Flights bound for New Plymouth and from Nelson and New Plymouth had been cancelled. Scheduled flights between Christchurch and Blenheim were delayed up to two hours this morning.

Meanwhile, the murky conditions were worsening on the city's northern motorway.

Motorists were told to take care and expect delays due to the conditions.
