Travel chaos as fog blankets Auckland

Thick fog shrouding Auckland this morning is causing travel chaos as nearly 70 flights are cancelled and delayed.

Motorists are crawling along suburban streets and motorways unable to see more than a few metres ahead in the treacherous conditions.

By 8am Auckland Airport had cancelled 66 domestic and regional flights, telling passengers to prepare for substantial delays.

One flight from Christchurch and one from Wellington have been unable to land in the foggy conditions, and three flights to the capital, Christchurch and Queenstown were yet to leave.

Photos from inside the terminal show long passenger queues forming.

But at this stage all international flights are operating as normal.

The Dunedin Airport website shows flights operating to schedule this morning.

Neon signs on the motorways are warning drivers to take care, as visibility is reduced across the network.

Alongside the weather delays, a breakdown on the Southern Motorway in a citybound lane during the morning rush hour is causing further hold-ups with motorists sitting in a 15 km crawl to town today.

The truck is blocking the left-lane on the Newmarket Viaduct.

Just before 8am NZTA said the breakdown was still blocking one lane and citybound traffic was now "very heavy" from Highbrook.

The MetService said fog around Auckland and Waikato this morning will clear, but showers are forecast after lunch for Auckland.
