Four charged over Ashburton death

Four people have been charged with manslaughter over the death of Ashburton man Arran Gairns.

Three men and a woman were charged today, Detective Senior Sergeant Marion Neill said.

Mr Gairns' body was found in a water run-off area behind a commercial building in Ashburton on June 1.

Police said he had been the subject of an attempted robbery before his death.

The people charged were Desmond Marshall, 46, of Ashburton, Olivia Lucas, 26, of Wellington, Mayfield man Verdun Perry, 24, and Kooly Te Tomo, 26, also from Ashburton.

They were due to appear in Timaru District Court on Thursday, Ms Neill said.
