One person is seriously injured and three others have moderate injuries after a car crossed the centre line and crashed into another vehicle in Upper Hutt this morning, police say.

The incident happened on State Highway 2 between Totara Park and Gibbons Street just before 6.30am, Senior Sergeant Marc Clausen of central police communications said.

The crash happened when a northbound car, with one person inside, drifted into the lane of the southbound vehicle, which was carrying three people, he said.

Following the incident, there was another minor nose-to-tail accident involving vehicles slowing down for the first crash.

A spokesman for Wellington Free Ambulance said a woman in her mid 20s, who was the rear seat occupant of the southbound vehicle, was flown to Wellington Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter with spinal and abdominal injuries.

A 19-year-old man with spinal injuries and a lower leg fracture was taken to Hutt Hospital.

Two other women aged in their mid-20s were also taken to Hutt Hospital with spinal injuries and one with abdominal injuries, the spokesman said.

The Police Serious Crash Unit was at the scene investigating the cause of the accident.

The northbound lanes were closed while the crash scene was measured, but SH2 was now open in both directions.
