Four trucks jackknife on Lewis Pass

Four trucks jackkifed and got stuck on both the West Coast and Canterbury sides of Lewis Pass early this morning.

Newstalk ZB reported the trucks got stuck about 4am this morning due to unexpected heavy snowfall.

Transport Agency journey manager, Tresca Forrester, said 2-5cm of snow was forecast for the area which was normal, however the snow fell very quickly.

The road's now closed with snow forecast to fall all day.

Snow was also falling on State Highway 73, Arthur's Pass - which remains open but chains are essential.

Earlier today NZTA had an area warning in place for SH6 Haast To Albert Town (Haast Pass) due to snow, this warning was lifted after conditions eased.
