A 4-year-old girl killed in a Canterbury car crash on Friday has been named by police.
Auckland girl Cloey Mikayla Faber-Thomas died in the smash near St Andrews in south Canterbury shortly after 2.45pm.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
"The next of kin are understandably extremely upset and the services of Victim Support have been offered to them," a police statement said today.
The young girl's distraught family has asked for privacy.
She was a rear seat passenger in a northbound Nissan Tida with her parents and sibling at the time of the crash.
Witnesses have told police that the Faber-Thomas' car crossed the centre line as it left a bend south of St Andrews.
Her parents are being treated at Christchurch Hospital. They have requested that no condition updates be given.
The driver and passenger of the southbound Nissan Terrano were taken to Timaru Hospital as a precaution and have since been discharged.
"The occupants of both vehicles were wearing appropriate restraints and Cloey was in an approved and correctly fitted car seat," police said.
The Waimate Highway section of State Highway 1 was closed while the Canterbury police serious crash unit completed a scene examination and the area was cleared on Friday.
Police investigations into the crash are ongoing.
