Fraud targets Youthline

A youth development organisation is warning about a fraudster making bogus fundraising calls in the Wellington region.

Youthline Wellington has been told by a member of the public of three calls she received within about a week from someone purporting to be from a "children's charity commission" and asking for donations on behalf of Youthline.

The organisation said it was aware of at least one similar incident earlier this year.

"Youthline does not engage in telephone fundraising. If you receive a call of this type, it will certainly be a scam," Youthline's national spokesman Stephen Bell said.

"It's quite disgusting and upsetting that anyone should attempt to persuade people to part with their money by pretending to collect funds for a respected organisation such as ours."

Anyone who received a call asking for a donation to Youthline, should immediately contact either the organisation or the police, Mr Bell said.
