Further remand of inmates accused of prison murder

Five Auckland prisoners accused of murdering fellow inmate Tue Faavae were further remanded after a brief appearance in North Shore District Court today.

The five, who have interim name suppression, were remanded in custody to reappear on November 25.

They were charged after the body of Samoan-born Faavae, 23, was found inside East Wing cell block in Auckland Prison at Paremoremo on March 1.

Quentin Duff, representing one of the accused, expressed his concern about the further delay.

He said the inmates had been on 23-hour a day lock-down since April.

A sixth man, who also has interim name suppression, is charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.

All men were charged after a month-long investigation at Auckland Prison at Paremoremo.

A depositions hearing date is set for December 7.
