An 8-year-old girl who was trapped in icy water for about two hours when the four-wheel-drive she was in rolled into a slurry pond has been discharged after spending the night in hospital.
The accident, which killed her 10-year-old brother, occurred at Ruatupu, near Hokitika last night.
Her father managed to escape from the semi-submerged vehicle and ran several kilometres to alert emergency services at about 7pm.
It is understood the girl survived thanks to an airpocket in the rear of the vehicle. Two officers dived into the icy water and pulled her out.
The 8-year-old was suffering from hypothermia, and was flown to Grey Base Hospital in the Solid Energy rescue helicopter.
A hospital spokesman said the girl was discharged this morning after overnight observation.
Her father was also taken to the hospital by ambulance last night, but was not admitted.
Police removed the body of the boy last night.
